Searching for an updated home but not seeing much that caught their eye, this couple chose to renovate their family home rather than move. Design Shop Interiors gave their home a top-to-bottom overhaul so it could continue to hold family gatherings while providing a fresh new look for the next phase of their life. See the results, beautifully captured by Stephanie Russo, in the tour below.
From the designer… Our clients raised their family in this home and were ready for a change. Seeking an upgrade, they considered moving, but in looking at other homes, couldn’t find anything with an outdoor space that they loved as much as their own. They decided to focus on renovating the interior of their beloved home and brought us on to help.
The kitchen had a great layout and really well-built cabinetry. Instead of gutting the entire space, we modified some of the cabinets and had them painted. We also added a new tiled backsplash and gorgeous quartzite countertops. The new brass lighting and plumbing fixtures were the perfect touch in warming up the entire space.
To create a more timeless home, we tend to shy away from creating too many overly designed areas, but our clients wanted a couple of big impact moments. We achieved this by running the new hardwood in a herringbone pattern in the entryway, which turned out stunning. We also created a gorgeous bar area off the dining room that feels both classic and swanky.
In both the family room and formal living room, we kept the existing fireplace inserts but completely reworked the surrounds. In the family room, we created a beautiful soapstone mantle that transformed the area, stealing the focus from the television. In the formal living room, we added some trim to the existing mantle and plastered over it for a clean look that allows the gorgeous sconces and the homeowners’ artwork to shine as the focal point.
We chose furniture with the intention to enhance the architectural details, further creating a design that’s both timeless and modern. We mixed new upholstery and case goods with treasured family art and accessories, giving the home a curated feel. One of our favorite details in the finishing touches of this project was utilizing these personal pieces. The portrait above the mantle in the formal living room is from a family member who had it commissioned to hang above his fireplace in a centennial farmhouse he had restored in Michigan! To add a bit more vintage charm to the space, we implemented carefully chosen stools and accessories from places like Round Top and The Shop, our brick & mortar storefront.
We didn’t just focus on looks in this project; practicality was important too, especially since it’s a family space. We used lots of family-friendly fabrics that are both durable and stylish, keeping the design intact. The end result is a cozy and inviting space that perfectly blends old and new elements.
