Blending practicality with transitional design, Katie Kern Interior Design collaborated with a seasoned general contractor to bring this North Dakota home to life. Photographed by Jill Ockhardt Blaufuss, the home balances durability and warmth, with thoughtful details that cater to the family’s lifestyle and pay homage to the surrounding wooded landscape.

From Katie Kern Interior Design…This client, a seasoned general contractor, came into the project with a clear vision for how the build would come together. Having already built two homes, they were confident in their preferences and knew exactly which materials and finishes they liked and which to avoid. To prevent the home from feeling too dark, we chose a greige tone for the painted trim and kitchen cabinets, complemented by lighter walls. Natural wood and dark espresso stains were introduced to highlight the character and knots in the white oak flooring. I also layered in rich, earthy green tones and a playful wallpaper to echo the surrounding wooded landscape and bring the outdoors in.
The kitchen’s unique layout is tailored perfectly to the family’s lifestyle. Their young daughter can easily join in on meal prep at the island, and the window above the sink offers a great view into the adjoining sunroom and grilling area. It was a very thoughtful detail that enhances both function and connection.
