A carefully chosen rug can be the finishing touch that brings a room together, blending colors, textures, and styles. With just a little care, your carefully selected vintage or antique rug can become an heirloom, adding warmth and character to your home for years to come. Below, District Loom shares a few simple tips to help ensure your rug stays as beautiful as the day you first brought it home.

No. 1 Unpack your rug and let it breathe

Your rug needs a rest after its journey. When you receive it, unroll it completely and allow it to settle without any furniture. Within a few days, it should flatten out and wrinkles will disappear. Rugs made from natural materials like wool, cotton, jute, and sisal are free from synthetic adhesives and coatings that can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This makes them a great choice for those who are sensitive to strong odors or looking for an eco-friendly option. If you’re concerned about indoor air quality, opting for natural fiber rugs ensures a healthier home environment. Even freshly unpacked natural fiber rugs may have a smell from being tightly wrapped. This is normal and will dissipate within a few days or weeks of being unwrapped and aired out.

No. 2 Use a felt rug pad under your rug

A high-quality felt rug pad does more than just prevent slipping—it also adds an extra layer of cushioning, making your rug feel softer underfoot while protecting both the rug and the flooring beneath it. By reducing friction and absorbing impact from foot traffic, a rug pad helps extend the life of your rug, keeping it looking fresh and in place for years to come.

No. 3 Do not fold your rug

When storing a rug, always roll it instead of folding it. Folding can create deep creases and permanent damage to the rug’s fibers, distorting its shape over time. Before rolling, ensure the rug is thoroughly cleaned and completely dry to prevent mildew or pests. Wrapping it in breathable fabric or a protective covering will further safeguard it from dust and moisture while in storage.

No. 4 Blot spills immediately

It’s a common misconception that a vintage rug needs to be protected from daily spills and messes. The truth is that the high-quality natural materials that vintage rugs are made of clean better (and easier!) than any modern day counterpart. If a spill happens, blot it immediately with a dry cloth or paper towel. Gently spot clean using water and a mild soap such as organic baby shampoo or clear dish soap. Avoid harsh chemicals or scrub brushes. For larger spills or tough stains, (don’t panic!) consult a professional cleaning service.
