Rather than sweating the small stuff, building mid-pandemic kept Jenna Barton and her team focused on the big picture; creating a forever home for her clients. Taking cues from nature and juxtaposing them with sleek lines, she designed a modern-treehouse abode that feels right at home in its Austin neighborhood. From the designer… Our clients purchased a lot in a picturesque neighborhood in Austin, Texas ready to build a home for their growing family. We worked hand-in-hand from the ground up with our clients, the builder, and the architect to ensure the house was not only beautiful but functional for this family. This means aspects like a guest ensuite for in-laws, kid’s play room, and home office were all must-haves.

Once the practical needs were met, we were able to pick finishes and furniture that were beautiful, unique, and a clear reflection of the family’s aesthetic. We incorporated their existing art collection into our design and sourced one-of-a-kind pieces from vintage stores and antique markets to give this house a style of its own (what can we say – we LOVE Round Top!). The living room chairs were a family heirloom from our clients that we had reupholstered to fit the space. We enjoy working with local suppliers and had several pieces like the island pendants and primary bedroom nightstands custom made.

We find our greatest inspiration in nature, and we love that this house has a “modern treehouse” vibe. We used natural wood tones and handmade tiles to keep things feeling organic and light and tried to bring as much of the outside in as possible.

We also try to incorporate interesting textures and materials into our designs. By doing things like plastering the powder bath, utilizing grasscloth wallpaper in the playroom, or painting the primary bedroom dark, each space has its own unique vibe while still feeling like one cohesive design.

Building a house during the height of the Covid pandemic brought an array of challenges, the main issue being delays in furniture and production. We encouraged our clients (and ourselves) to remain patient and trust that everything was going to look absolutely beautiful in the end! Staying focused on the big picture helps to keep from getting derailed by the million little things that pop up everyday and reminding yourself of the why – like building a forever home for your family – helps push you to the finish line.
