In this Toronto kitchen renovation, designer Jennifer McLean Interiors worked alongside Thorncrest Kitchens to breathe new life into a narrow space that had not been updated in over two decades. This transformation artfully combines functional elements with vintage details allowing this kitchen to work harder and feel larger, all while retaining a quaint and cozy feeling. Valerie Wilcox Photography captured the magic below.
From the designer… I updated this kitchen, which hadn’t been renovated in over 20 years, to achieve a balanced space that seamlessly combines practical design with beautiful features. I opted for a mix of painted lower cabinets paired with a pantry and floating shelves in rich walnut, and worked closely with Thorncrest Kitchens to maximize storage in the narrow footprint. I repurposed an underused desk area into a stylish walnut pantry/coffee bar with retractable doors and an integrated fridge. On the opposite wall, I included lower cabinets, ceiling-to-counter bookend cabinets, and walnut floating shelves to create a functional yet elegant space. A slim island topped with soapstone facilitates kitchen prep.
I chose Borghini marble with dramatic veining before demolition to set the color palette. To add charm and a vintage touch, I incorporated William Morris Boughs Wallpaper and unlacquered brass hardware that will develop a patina over time. A marble ledge and floating walnut shelves allow for the display of meaningful collectibles, giving the space a personal touch. The result is a kitchen that beautifully marries form and function with stylish design details.
