Salt Design Company reimagined the essence of this New Jersey mountain lodge through the lens of surf culture. Drawing on the homeowner’s South African roots and love for the ocean, the design blends industrial and contemporary influences to create a space that feels both rugged and refined. The transformation was photographed by Linda Pordon in the tour below.

From Salt Design Company…At the initial design stages, the homeowners were a bit overwhelmed by the conflicting hard elements throughout the house, such as parquet wood flooring, wood paneled ceilings, modern stone veneer accent walls, and brick fireplaces. It was essential to approach the designs with the long-term vision in mind: how can we hone in on the original architecture to fine-tune the essence, flow, and function of the home?
After many iterations of the layout, we landed on an oversized island in the kitchen that would redirect the eye to the stunning ocean views. Changing the orientation of the long galley kitchen allowed for better flow, optimized storage, and a more usable footprint of the kitchen and living spaces. From a design perspective, it was an integral part of the design to keep the original Brazilian cherry hardwood floors, minimize the redundant use of extraneous hard materials, and introduce timeless, contemporary materials such as concrete and stainless steel.
