This home renovation holds special meaning for designer Katie of Bogart Interiors, as it’s home to her family of six and two dogs. Driven by a vision to create a bright and welcoming kitchen, she transformed their outdated, cramped house into a spacious, inviting haven, preserving cherished elements like their beloved 12-foot farm table. The remarkable expansion is beautifully captured in the photos by Jessica Delaney below.

From the designer… This is a very personal project as it is the home for our family of six (and two dogs). My husband, a contractor, and I had been dreaming and scheming about this project since the day we bought our home about seven years prior. It was a four bedroom house with one and a half baths. The kitchen was on the north side of the house and the kitchen sink faced a blank wall with nothing but a ceiling light mounted on the wall in front of my face that I would stare at every day as I washed my dishes. It was dark and small and depressing!

When the time finally presented itself, we tweaked and made a million revisions until we finally settled on a final plan that added a full kitchen and dining room overlooking the backyard and pool, as well as an additional bedroom, two full baths, and moved our laundry from the basement to the second floor (this might be the biggest game changer!). Our old kitchen is now a workhorse of a mudroom/entry. We used salvaged bricks from a demolition my husband had done of a patio in Back Bay of Boston as the floor and I couldn’t be happier. It hides everything under the sun.

The goal was to add space, but mostly to have a kitchen which could serve as the backdrop for family meals and hosting in a way that our current space wasn’t able to. Without a doubt, we spend most of our time in the kitchen and I wouldn’t have it any other way! We also needed to accomodate a kitchen table which we didn’t want to part with. It had been gifted to us and is a 12-foot-long farm table made from reclaimed wood that we love. It is very forgiving and serves as many things from a craft table to hosting a Thanksgiving feast without missing a beat.

Needless to say, this has transformed our home and family life without a doubt. The biggest challenge for us was living in the home while addition/renovation work was happening. I do not recommend it and in hindsight would have probably planned that differently! But, we are on the other side and stronger for it!
