When restoring your family home just isn’t in the cards, what’s a designer to do? That’s just the challenge that Kim Drakopoulos of Wellhouse & Co was faced with when purchasing her family’s estate. This beautiful new build in Centreville, VA sprung up from old family memories and modern design. Take a peek at how she accomplished a classic farmhouse vibe with mid-century appeal in the beautiful pictures by Jenn Verrier Photography.
This project was a dream my husband and I had from start to finish! It’s my family’s own home, located on 25 acres in Virginia just outside of Washington DC. When we purchased the property, our initial plan was to restore the 70 year old home located on it, but ultimately we determined it was beyond repair (and it would have been too hard to expand it and squeeze in our four kids and two dogs). Our goal was to create a farmhouse that would suit the property and look like it had been there for many years. But we have a more modern aesthetic, so we kept the exterior clean and simple with white siding, a gray metal roof, and just a few wood accents. The interior leans vintage modern with a few farmhouse accents. We were able to salvage several elements from the old house – including the antique wood beams in the kitchen and the closet doors in the mudroom. My grandfather passed along a mid-century teak dining table and an authentic Knoll Saarinen table with tulip chairs. We added a sputnik chandelier and other modern lighting to solidify the mid-century vibe to white walls and warm wood tones. My husband would have loved high gloss white cabinets throughout, but I wasn’t convinced that would meld with the exterior, so we kept the bathrooms sleek and modern as a compromise
There were a few challenges along the way (what project doesn’t have those!), but overall, our builder, Zeb Bogdanich of North Fork Design Build did a fabulous job. My favorite thing about the project was definitely the process of drawing the home on paper and then watching it become a reality. The kitchen is my favorite room – that’s where we spend almost all our time – especially with four teenagers at home!
