How does one take a standard builder-grade house and turn it into a bespoke home? That’s just what Hayley of HLC Studio set out to do in this California home makeover. By cleverly extending walls to create built-in shelving and layering in traditional millwork she created a home that is filled with touches of European charm. With every project, we’re always looking to add character, especially with new builds. We carefully designed every detail of this home to not only reflect our amazing clients but also add interior details that make this builder-grade home feel custom and give it that charm!
We started by thinking about what interior architectural details we could add to bring in character. We extended the living room wall to allow room for these beautiful recessed bookcases. We painted them the same color as the walls, added picture lights, and vertical paneling to give that old English feel. We were able to pick through our client’s very impressive book collection to incorporate into the bookcases and throughout the home. Every single book is from their library! We layered those with art, family photos, greenery, and vintage accents. We kept it cohesive with earthy tones, layered textiles, and pops of warm colors throughout.
We continued those details in the entry with more millwork, a reclaimed wood table, and a round mirror for a touch of modernity. We brought warmth into the kitchen with more reclaimed wood, woven baskets, and drapery to add texture. It was such a fulfilling project with tears of joy and wonderful clients that completely trusted us to turn their new house into a home.
