The Home Industry's Top Experts & Creatives

Unsure of whether they would relocate in the future or remain in their home, this empty-nester couple wanted a home update that could move with them if needed. Lauren Jacobsen created an investment-friendly renovation that gave their family home a fresh and timeless look with flexibility. Read on for the full story and tour, shot by  Nicole Dianne.

From the designer… Our clients came to us as newfound empty nesters and were ready for an update. With both of their kids off to college and starting their careers, the client had a specific purpose and vision – to create a space that their children could home to and gather with their growing families.

Uncertain of what their long-term future would hold, whether that be staying in the home or moving to a new space later down the road, we focused on a conserved renovation budget by preserving the existing cabinetry work in the kitchen and guest bathroom, which allowed us to spend more on versatile furniture pieces, artwork, and lighting that the client could take with them and enjoy for many years to come.

With an existing open-concept layout, simplicity and elegance coupled with a neutral color palette, set the stage for creating a cohesive and welcoming space felt by all who enter.

While working with the existing cabinets in the kitchen, we took out the old island and built a new one, making this the main gathering space. We added a neutral tile backspace by Fireclay, a hood over the range and beautiful soapstone countertops, which in my opinion are the true star in this kitchen!

Our standout moment has to be the front entry room, with the vintage English pine dining table, natural fiber woven chairs, and sophisticated overhead light fixture, which helped create visual comfort and a timeless look. Prior to renovation, the home had many wall cutouts and niches, one of which was not an option to fill due to structural components. To fill the space, we found a casement that fit down to 1/8” to make it look like a built-in, which was the perfect complement to the dining table.

Throughout the home, we brought in a lot of vintage pieces to mix old with new, to make the entire space feel lived in, but updated over time. We were inspired by our clients’ love for English country pieces while bringing some more contemporary lines to help create a balanced feel. Our client also loves lighting, so we incorporated layered lighting, such as table lamps, chandeliers, and pendants wherever we could.

With a newly found love for their home, our clients are excited to make more memories in this beautiful, yet sophisticated space.
