Hillary Calvert Design took down walls but kept the original terracotta floors in this San Clemente remodel. Inspired by California-Spanish style she layered in plaster walls and natural textures to complete this surfer-friendly home. See how it all came together in the serene shots below by Charlotte Lea.
From the designer… This cozy Spanish-style home was big on character but small on space. We knocked down some existing walls to open up the kitchen and create a functional dining nook for this young surf-going family. Our design inspiration came from classic California Spanish-style homes with terracotta floors, rich woods, and smooth plaster walls. We blended that idea with a casual coastal aesthetic full of neutrals and textures.
We kept the original terracotta floors and did all new cabinetry including a custom island stained to match the original front door. The furnishings and decor and simple, natural, and functional — woven rug and window treatments, terracotta vessels, and nubby, cozy textiles. The fireplace is done in a beautiful checkered zellige tile. The pillows, throws, and art in this project were a collaboration with Jordan Page of High Desert Studio and the project was shot by Charlotte Lea and styled by Jen Mac Beth of California Casa.
