Cresting a forested ridge at the foot of a towering 14,000-foot peak, this warm, modern mountain home channels the intimacy of camping while opening to sweeping alpine views. Designed by Studio Plow founder Brit Epperson as the studio’s first ground-up residential project and photographed by Nicole Franzen, this striking abode embraces the surrounding forest and offers a welcoming family refuge.

From Studio Plow… Tucked away in the forest of Colorado’s Front Range is Chimney Rock, a 3,064 square foot residence designed by Studio Plow to emulate the intimacy of camping while maximizing the area’s grand mountain views. Inspired by household rituals and a deep connection to nature, each detail of this special home was lovingly crafted in collaboration with kin.
In 2016, Studio Plow Founder and Chief Creative Officer Brit Epperson sat down with her parents to discuss a dream that was finally coming to fruition. Curtis and Debbie Karber were building their first home, with their architect daughter designing it from the ground up. After years of holiday gatherings spent poring over project plans, the design materialized into a forever home where the Karber family could gather for years to come.

Hiking and camping are central to the clients’ lifestyle, and their vision was to live in a home that evoked the same intimacy with nature. They wanted the feeling of being nestled in the woods while still having access to breathtaking views.

The experience of Chimney Rock begins before stepping inside. The site boasts elevated views of forested, sloping valleys that frame the dramatic peaks of the Rocky Mountains to the west, along with ancient red rock formations to the south that border an expansive cityscape. To capture these moments, towering walls of glass open to snow capped mountains and forested valleys of juniper, Ponderosa pine, scrub oak, and white fir throughout the western facing side of the home.
