This thoughtfully designed home by Marin Design Co. balances tradition with modern functionality to accommodate a busy family of seven. Captured by Nicole Dianne Photography, the project was a labor of love, spanning three years to create a space where music, literature, and everyday life seamlessly coexist. With carefully crafted details like a cozy library tucked within the music room and a Lego room designed for creativity, every element was designed to reflect the family’s lifestyle while embracing relaxed California casual style.

From Marin Design Co.The Brick House Haven home was very near to our hearts as it was one of Marin Design Co.’s first large scale projects. We were on the project from the beginning and it took about three years to complete. The home is a new build in Granite Bay, CA for a family of seven. We knew we needed to keep durability and functionality at the forefront since it would be home to a large family. We set our sights out to create a traditional home with transitional elements making an inviting and elevated family friendly space.

Our design intent was inspired by the family whose home it would be and the beautiful natural surroundings in Northern California. Their family includes five children, all boys, who are musicians and readers. This posed a fun challenge for our design team as we had to create spaces where the family could quietly tuck away to read, such as the study, and sound proof areas for them to play their instruments. To optimize functionality, we incorporated two laundry rooms, one upstairs, one downstairs, a water fountain, a drink station, and a lego room.

Stepping into the kitchen, a deep navy island anchors the space and provides a beautiful juxtaposition to the warm white perimeter cabinetry. A dark walnut hutch with aged brass hardware sits in the corner of the kitchen, creating dimension and intrigue. The cabinetry makes the perfect space to hold treasured servingware and china. Zellige tiles adorn the sink wall and create a frame like effect on the passthrough windows looking out on the backyard.

Open to the kitchen, the living room is a cohesive blend of inviting and formal elements. As it is the main living room, we wanted it to feel comfortable for the entire family, while still being elegant. To achieve this, we honed in on the architectural aspects. The plaster fireplace is in the same paint color as the room, but lends texture and character to the space. By bringing in a mix of antique and new furnishings, we found a transitional balance.

The moody library, with its dark blue walls, beckons you to explore the mysteries held within its cozy embrace. The library is tucked within the expansive music room, and acts as a secluded retreat from the rest of the home. Walnut ladders flank the library, allowing you to reach all corners of the space. The fireplace provides the perfect backdrop to curl up with a book and get lost in a literary world of wonder.

A sanctuary for the owners, the primary bath was designed with functionality and beauty at the forefront. The large windows let in ample sunlight, naturally highlighting the custom features of the space. The white oak cabinetry plays well against the cool toned Carrara marble, with aged brass hardware tying the two together.
