This Mar Vista home, designed by Stefani Stein and photographed by Sam Frost Studio, masterfully blends East Coast charm with California’s relaxed coastal vibe. Once a disjointed space, it was transformed into a laidback retreat, featuring a soft color palette and contrasting textures from Stein’s own shop, August Abode. The design reflects the homeowners’ Vermont heritage while embracing their new West Coast lifestyle, resulting in a cozy, sun-filled space that feels effortlessly timeless.
From the designer… When I first visited the house, the future owners were still deciding whether to buy it. I noted that it was quite disjointed, with clashing colors and outdated materials, but it had great potential as a blank canvas. After relocating from Vermont a few years earlier, the young family wanted a new home that was both sunny and serene, reflecting their new coastal lifestyle while still honoring their East Coast heritage. My final design blends the modern, laid-back style of California with the cozy charm of classic New England. I played with different fabrics, mixing patterns and designs reminiscent of a Vermont cottage, intermixed with clean and whimsical pieces, in a coastal and California-inspired color scheme.
For me, a great space needs a bit of contrast.
