Tasked with remodeling a 1955 California home gutted to the studs, Alison Haltom of Design For Living, designed a space that reflected her client’s distinctive style and natural surroundings. Nicole Dianne Photography captured the reimagined layout showcasing the earthy elements and moody vibes that craft this inviting and uniquely personal home. Take the tour below to see how it all came together!

From the designer… When our client approached us to help with the remodel of her 1955 home near downtown Auburn, it was already gutted to the studs and needed a complete remodel. After bringing in an architect to update the footprint, including opening the kitchen and dining room and expanding the main bedroom and en suite, we got to work with space planning. We laid out the kitchen to have a large island with a prep station, open shelves flanking the range, and full-height cabinetry to house a pantry and coffee bar. A row of lower cabinets against the half wall leading to the stairwell creates a bar and drinks station. Azzurra Bay quartzite slabs with a soft yet dramatic vein cover the counters and matte white textured subway tiles in a vertical set finish the backsplash. Black metal shelves are built into the wall dividing the kitchen and living room, showcasing a peek into the front of the house. A wall of windows behind the dining table bring in natural light and a view of the neighborhood, while a large balcony off the kitchen feels nestled in the trees.

The cozy living room is our favorite room in the house. A statement marble fireplace was created from a single slab of marble with a simple mitered edge frame. Custom curtains in a burnt orange velvet frame the large front windows, while a dark grey leather sectional with a marble-topped coffee table sits on an antique handwoven Malayer area rug. A gallery wall was created off of the living room to showcase heirloom photos of the client’s family in Greece.

Off the entry is a dramatic powder room with a custom cut Michaelangelo quartzite vanity and integrated sink. The wall-mount faucet and brass sconces add glam to the moody space. Farrow and Ball Carriage Green walls and ceilings compliment the Nero Marquina marble mosaic floor.

Down the hall, moody black furniture is carried into the main bedroom, but softened with white linen curtains and accented with soft grey textures to create a private retreat. In the main bathroom en suite, textured black and white wall tiles accented with brass plumbing fixtures and a matte white freestanding tub are warmed by a walnut vanity with a thick black granite countertop. Through the bathroom is a custom closet with black and white cabinetry, accented with gold hardware.

Our client wanted a home that was uniquely hers- filled with moody and dramatic moments that tied into the natural surroundings of the foothills and showcased her collected pieces.
