Designed by Anja Michals Design and photographed by Jessica Burke, this Piedmont home makes a quiet statement through layered materials and joyful retraint. From checkered chairs to the honed marble fireplace, every element feels considered but never overthought, proof that classic design doesn’t have to play it safe.

From Anja Michals Design…This classic Piedmont home, built in the 1930s, is where this project began. A beautiful home with great bones, the previous owners had lived there with their family for 25 years. My clients, moving in with their own family, felt like it was the start of a new chapter for them. The inspiration was a California vibe, with white oak details in the kitchen and warm materials, such as the stunning Monet marble in the kitchen and butler’s pantry, as well as brass lighting.
We completely changed the layout, adding a 12-foot island for the family of five and a built-in banquette. Off the kitchen, we added a seating area where the kids could hang out and do homework. We wanted all of the spaces to be usable and functional for this active family. We upholstered the banquette seating with Peter Dunham’s outdoor fabric for durability, using blue and green accents. This palette continued in the main living area, with a mint green couch from Lawson-Fenning and plaid swivel chairs from Nickey Kehoe.
