Designer Lisa Stegman of Smiddy Stegman reimagined this traditional 1980s Calgary home as a modern yet cozy haven. Captured beautifully by photographer Eymeric Widling, Lisa’s design weaves natural elements through each room, highlighted by thoughtful touches like wood-framed windows and recessed baseboards. The result is a relaxed and contemporary atmosphere that proves warm tones and textures bring modern design to life.

From the designer… This project was a two-year design journey that saw the rejuvenation of this 1,900 square foot, 1980s home located in Calgary. We call it the Soft Modern Retreat—a title that perfectly captures the essence of this warm, contemporary space that was entirely reimagined for its loyal owners. Reflecting on their vision, the homeowners said, “We got tired of looking for a modern home in an established neighborhood, and instead decided to build a new home inside our old home.” Our aim was to transform their traditional space into a modern yet cozy haven, blending contemporary aesthetics with the warmth and comfort that modern interiors often lack.
This home’s location, backing onto a park, means natural elements intentionally flow throughout the space. While black interior windows have gained popularity for their stark, modern appeal, instead, we chose wood windows to harmonize with the soft, enveloping warmth of the surrounding nature. This decision not only brings the outdoors in but also softens the sharp lines typical of modern design, creating a more tonal and inviting atmosphere. The interior architecture and millwork seamlessly weave together a softer, more organic indoor environment.

Throughout the home, we emphasized warmth, such as in the kitchen’s wood cabinets, which provide a beautiful contrast to the once ubiquitous stark modern whites. We embraced warm hues to enhance the space’s comfort and livability, proving that beige is far from boring. Further refining the home’s modern charm are details such as drywall returns, flat slab wood doors, and recessed baseboards which blend effortlessly with the natural textures and hues of the interior. Relocating the kitchen to a former living room underscores our commitment to aesthetic and functional enhancements. This shift not only meets practical storage needs but also turns the kitchen into the vibrant heart of the home, now awash with natural light and expansive views.
