Nearly 15 years after originally touring this home, designer Christina Kim, had the chance to give this dated Ranch a full redesign. Ideally positioned in the scenic woodlands near Rumson, New Jersey, and just minutes from the beach, this expansive mid-century ranch home now offers a unique blend of natural tranquility and California-cool elements. Learn how Christina finally gave this home the update it deserved in the tour below.
From the designer… Situated in the woodlands near hiking trails and wildlife, yet just minutes from the beach in Rumson, New Jersey, this sprawling mid-century ranch home, built in 1958, offers the best of both worlds. Originally, Christina considered purchasing this home nearly 15 years ago but decided it required too extensive a renovation for her growing family. Serendipitously, the new homeowners, a professional couple with grown children, sought out Christina to reimagine their space.
Combining East and West coast influences, Christina’s warm, modern approach resonated with the homeowners, resulting in a breezy, peaceful, and modern California-cool home on the New Jersey coast. Initially planning a short stay, the homeowners were so pleased with the transformation that they now view it as a potential forever home. The project aimed for a minimalist and comfortable facelift, focusing on the kitchen, fireplaces, custom built-ins, landscaping, and exterior updates.
The most significant change occurred in the kitchen, where dark wood cabinets and lime green tile were replaced with light and fresh elements to enhance the space. In the living room, a new fireplace and thoughtful design elements brought balance and cohesion. Custom details, such as a slatted wall in the sunken living room and a sanctuary-like primary bedroom, added both functionality and style.
Embracing a serene atmosphere, the decor incorporated shades of white, cerused woods, soft leathers, and earthy tones complemented by coastal art accents. The project, completed over a year, culminated in a space that delighted the clients and inspired them to extend their initial plans. Christina’s ultimate challenge is to create a home that not only meets expectations but exceeds them, leaving clients eager to stay for years to come.
