From the designer… When our clients decided they had endured their last New York winter, it was time to move back home, closer to family in Southern California. With a little one on the way, our sweet clients tasked us with transforming their never-seen Lake Forest home into a fun and funky family retreat, with elements of that signature California coastal style mixed in.
The first focus was the great room – seemingly too big for a living room, but too tight with a dining space added in. We reworked the furniture plan, eliminated the too-big island from the kitchen, and relocated the dining to be adjacent to the kitchen. A new kitchen layout focuses on a beautiful terrazzo range hood and backsplash, while multi-tone cabinets tie into elements throughout the home. For a family that likes to host, we incorporated plenty of seating, with a large custom sectional as the star of the show. The dated fireplace needed an update, which came in the form of handcrafted glazed ceramic tile, and a custom shelving niche for displaying décor. Pops of green are woven throughout, reminiscent of the greens and foliage right outside.
The primary suite received a full update, and the removal of an oversized tub made room for the shower of our clients’ dreams! With a tiled bench nook and custom his-and-hers vanities, the bathroom has become a true retreat. We leaned into the idea of a retreat in the bedroom, channeling a hotel-esque feel with a dramatic full-wall upholstered headboard and luxe wallpaper on the ceiling. Neutral furnishings complement the monochromatic space. Full of family-friendly spunk, this home speaks to our clients’ big city past, as they create their new life in SoCal.
