This Santa Ynez ranch home truly embodies the luxurious country escape we all dream of. Blackband Design masterfully created a space that imbues the indoors with organic and refined elements, while inviting one to step outside through use of expansive windows and sliding doors. From the designer… Inspired by the age-old oak trees and rustic charm of its surrounding landscape, Project Santa Ynez is a luxury estate built for laidback country living. Custom home builder Andrew Patterson invited us onto his team with Brandon Architects to create this one-of-a-kind getaway retreat for his family affectionately referred to as “The Farm.” This passion project of sorts resulted in striking design features, a beautiful execution of craftsmanship by all parties involved, and priceless memories that will be treasured for years to come.

Outdoor exploration is a huge part of the family’s time spent at The Farm so spaces were designed to welcome the outdoors in through expansive sliding doors, oversized picture windows, natural and exotic materials, and materials that will stand up to dirt! Our goal was to keep rooms open (to each other and the exterior) and offer lots of seating to enjoy the views without feeling closed off. The interiors are a retreat from the sun that still offer an appreciation for their surroundings.

The soft, Earthy color palette comes alive with olive greens, sun-kissed oranges, marigolds, and inky, indigo blues. Vaulted ceilings and the overall large volume of the home allowed for statement lighting without obstructing any views — both a must on the homeowners’ wish list. A mix of found and custom furnishings fill each space with comfort and relaxed, yet sophisticated, style.

We were given a lot of creative freedom to take the Pattersons’ vision for the home and execute elevated designs that surpassed their expectations. One memorable story — we insisted on the woven rocking chairs for the great room in the furnishings presentation, but when they were delayed on backorder there was a question of whether or not they were meant to be for the space… The chairs arrived on photoshoot day and instantly became one of the family’s favorite spots to soak in the scenic views and serenity.
