What did you do before becoming interior designers and how did Maverick Design come to life?
Maverick is a boutique design and renovation company with a unique elegance that resonates across a wide range of styles. The design studio was created out of a desire to bring beautiful, high-end design to our home buyers and clients at a wide range of budgets. Our designers are known for creating truly imaginative spaces that are both tastefully creative and invitingly livable. While Maverick’s main focus is working with investors and developers to allow home buyers exclusive access to designer homes, we have begun taking on outside clients who would like to remodel their homes in our signature Maverick style. Before working at Maverick design, many of our designers worked in a variety of focuses from international hospitality design, commercial design, marketing, and high-end residential. Our blend of backgrounds has offered us a unique design perspective and experience!
Where does the inspiration process start for you with each new project?
Our inspiration process typically starts by visiting a home to get a feel for its bones and innate character. We find that by understanding a home’s existing style, we can better brainstorm on how to elevate, enhance, and make a memorable space that people will love to live in. Our goal is to focus on what areas and spaces of the home will give clients and buyers the biggest impact for their investment. From there Maverick begins to develop a concept that will push the envelope of what is expected by using a mix of finishes and fixtures that come together to exceed expectations.
What is your favorite part of the design process? The most challenging?
Our favorite part of the design process is being able to see the (often hidden) potential in every home. The magic of our design process is having the vision to see what the home could be and putting together perfect blend of materials, finishes, fixtures, and layout modifications needed to get it there.
A challenging part of the design process can be making our vision come to life within a variety of budgets. We pride ourselves on coming up with creative, strategic, and cost-effective solutions. We actually love that this challenge becomes a fun part of the process as well.
What does a typical day look like at Maverick Design Studio?
Our typical day is never typical! What we love about Maverick is that each day is different. On any given day we might be visiting sites to check on progress or meeting the team to kick off our latest renovation, brainstorming in meetings at the design studio or coordinating with vendors off-site to make sure our designs are implemented perfectly. We also do a lot of our own in-house home staging so we might be purchasing furniture and décor or installing them at our completed projects that will be hitting the market. We work on homes throughout the country so we are often traveling as well, which keeps things interesting!
With a diversely talented design team in your studio, what is your best advice for others who want to expand their business and hire employees?
We look for people who love design, are passionate, and driven. While having an eye for design and technical capabilities are incredibly important, we also focus on finding people that are like-minded and that we are excited to work with! Our goal is to work with people who are teachable, creative problem solvers, and talented. We’ve worked hard to build team and environment that we love, are inspired by, and genuinely enjoy. Once you do that, we’ve found that often great people with strong talent can often end up finding you!!
If you could design only ONE room for an entire year, which one would it be and why?
Kitchens! As people say, they truly are the heart of the home. They allow us to flex our design muscles and come up with a myriad of creative solutions. We never get tired of adding unexpected details, new finishes, and anticipating trends.
What advice would you give yourself in your first year of business?
Take risks, believe in what you do, and bring your best creative effort to everything. Also, make sure you take really good photos of your work to build your portfolio!
If you could sit next to any other designer in the world on a 5 hour flight, who would it be and why?
We are loving what Gwyneth Paltrow is doing right now with Goop, while not an interior designer in the traditional sense we are inspired by her aesthetic, wellness focus, and ability to curate a unique brand experience.
If you had to use only ONE paint color throughout a home, what hue would it be?
White! We love airy fresh spaces that feel warm, inviting, relaxing, and on trend.
