Nicole Bechbache and Sydni Hoffman of Stafford House Studio bring a thoughtful approach to this Toronto residence, where existing stonework and a quiet sense of history set the tone for the design. Captured by Niamh Barry, the home reflects a layered European sensibility shaped through natural materials and subtle, character-driven updates. Home to a growing family with three young boys, their design prioritizes both function and feeling, with spaces that support everyday life while maintaining a sense of refinement.
From Stafford House Studio... After relocating from San Francisco, this family of five moved back to the husband’s hometown of Toronto, bringing together his local roots and the wife’s upbringing in Belgium to create a home that reflects both familiarity and a European sensibility. The homeowners were drawn to much of what the home already had to offer, so the goal was to preserve its original charm while thoughtfully adapting it to accommodate the needs of a growing young family.
The existing architecture set a strong foundation. A distinctive stone façade extends into the interior, giving the home a sense of warmth and permanence rarely found in a city setting. Rather than compete with these elements, the design builds upon them, creating a space that feels like a cottage in the city. A modern European perspective meets organic cottage influences, with natural materials leading throughout. Warm woods, soft linens, woven textures, and lime-washed stone create depth while maintaining a relaxed atmosphere. The palette remains grounded in warm neutrals, punctuated by notes of clay, ochre, terracotta, olive, and burnished bronze. Artisanal ceramics, tailored upholstery, and sculptural lighting introduce subtle moments of character, while lived-in finishes keep the home approachable. The result feels layered and intuitive, never overworked.
One of the most distinctive features of the home was the existing stone wall, which the clients loved but felt heavy and drab. To achieve a fresher, more Mediterranean feel, we carefully washed the stone in a creamy tone that brightened the space while preserving its natural texture. It required several iterations to find the right balance due to the way the stone absorbed the finish, but the result felt both refined and authentic.
An enclosed glass wine cellar no longer suited the family’s lifestyle, so it was re-imaged as an open office. What resonates most is how naturally the home reflects the family’s story. Preserving and reworking the stone walls honors its history, while the transformation of the wine cellar speaks to how the family lives today, aligning character with practicality. Together, these moments shape a home that feels considered, evolving alongside the people who live in it.
