Every shot of this San Dimas, CA home, photographed by Ryan Garvin, shows off the neutral patterns and textures that create this bold yet soft dwelling. Kennedy Cole Interior Design infused her clients’ home with the qualities they value and travel mementos they cherish to create a home with bespoke functionality and deep roots to their culture. Take a peek at the photos below to see how it call came together.

From the designer… Married only a year or two, we’d been working with this client to remodel their first home when we started the search and found this new Spanish style retreat. The goal, above all, was to infuse it with their personalities and culture while including as much function as possible. Additionally, the home had just been remodeled and our clients wanted to avoid being wasteful. Working within those parameters meant understanding our client’s needs and developing each finishing touch to be impactful, necessary, and awe inspiring, truly making this house a home for them.

With this beautiful space being so open and clean, it really lacked storage and privacy. At the entry, there wasn’t even a coat closet that could lend to the entertaining they would be doing, and the office on the main level didn’t even have a door. After bringing our main wall forward, we installed custom doors made of glass and steel that bring privacy and sound dampening to the office while creating a bold impact at the entry – the kind of character our client’s home deserves.

Now, upon entry, you’re met with personality and culture. A landing zone that highlights African masks from travel, a custom coat closet with beautiful cane weaving and sleek niche shelves with heirlooms and collectibles that are dear to the client. Each special piece is really a unique representation of the homeowners and what they value. The general landscape is natural and organic, with a mix of teal hues that range from moody to muted and bold again throughout the space.

Although they weren’t expecting just yet, our clients decided to have us design the nursery for the child they were working toward, a sleek, subtle and neutral room that is soft and welcoming, comfy and cozy. We took all of the afro elements from the house and considered them again in this space, but this time with a much more calm demeanor. Only a few months before our install, we were honored to learn that the baby was in tow and we were able to customize the finishing pieces with a natural wood name sign to welcome the baby home.

The primary bedroom and bathroom are the result of well-traveled clients, who wanted a hotel-esque experience without the pretension. A custom channel tufted headboard with built in sconces and custom nightstands make this space function specifically for our clients. These sorts of bespoke fittings create a standard of living that is unmatched. In the bathroom, we inherited a layout and finishes that the client loved, but still felt understated. With some small revisions to the bathroom by expanding the shower, installing a steam unit, and including some intricate tile work throughout, this space easily began to form into a suite that was perfect for our clients. Bold yet soft, enterprising and ambitious, authentic and proud – all words we would use to describe our clients, and in turn, is the result of the home they now inhabit.
