Steeped in history and charm, this house underwent a thorough renovation to blend its original character with modern functionality. RS Design Management redesigned this home to include a new mudroom and pantry and an updated kitchen while preserving the home’s elegant heritage. Every detail was thoughtfully crafted to honor the home’s roots and fulfill the client’s vision for a harmonious, updated space that blends with the style of the rest of their home.

From the designer… Built in 1931 this house was oozing with history and charm. After some previous additions and renovations, the space we had to work with consisted of a staircase that connected the basement and the second floor, mudroom, pantry area and kitchen. It was completely chopped up. Several walls were removed along with the staircase to create a dedicated space for the kitchen, new mudroom and new pantry. Our client had a specific style in mind and the style and the flow of the new kitchen had to blend with the existing adjoining dining room which is elegant and formal with gorgeous built-in’s and paneled walls with wallpaper. We brought in unexpected design moments and sprinkled them throughout, like the metal cuffs on the island legs or the tongue and groove paneling in the mudroom.

Keeping the existing windows was important to the integrity of the house and the design. Our challenge was fitting the appliances that need wall space into an area that had minimal walls. We created a feature wall with a metal range hood and flanked by windows on either side. By paneling the fridge and freezer, we were able to conceal the tall appliances and create a seamless, cohesive look. We wanted to honor the design of the house which was rooted in history and update the kitchen with integrity to the original style.
