Alex Boudreau Studio brought contemporary eclectic charm to this Dallas, Texas home, crafting a space as warm and inviting as it is functional. Captured beautifully by Yanglin Cai Photography, this transformed cottage balances vibrant personality and practical design, creating a welcoming oasis in the heart of the city. From highly custom built-ins to playful patterns, every room tells a story with thoughtful touches that make the home both personal and memorable.

From the designer… We helped Sarah and her family transform their Dallas home, turning it into a warm, highly functional space they love. The real-estate listing photos of the house’s interior were less than appealing, but the lush backyard caught their attention, and they were hooked. Sarah, the homeowner, said it felt like a “little nature oasis in the middle of the city.” Seven years in, they wanted to make the interior better reflect their lifestyle.
In the entryway, instead of a typical mudroom, we created built-in storage for coats, backpacks, sports equipment, and instruments, making the area feel organized and welcoming. The ceiling even features a subtle painted detail, a trick to make the space feel larger that guests often don’t notice until they’ve visited a few times.

Repurposing the entry room as a multifunctional hangout area meant relocating the dining table. Fortunately, we found a perfect spot around the corner. A built-in banquette maximizes space, and the upholstery adds personality, including a fun pattern on the fabric that guests are invited to guess. (Hint: it’s lips!)

The living room got a similar makeover, with a custom-built sectional that includes push-to-open drawers for the family’s extensive board game collection. Favorites like Uno, Clue, and Bananagrams are now always close by. A hinged cupboard above the fireplace hides the TV and can be pulled down for movie nights, cleverly avoiding the high ceilings.

In the primary suite, we created a “treehouse retreat” vibe by using a soft, custom-blended blue on the walls. The calming color and cozy furnishings make it Sarah’s favorite spot in the house, a peaceful haven that she says has brought her comfort and joy.

We also reimagined the girls’ bathroom, which was originally set up as a powder room with a small corner shower. We swapped the pedestal sink for a double vanity with open shelves and plenty of cabinets in a creamy white and apricot color. A compact, custom tub-shower combo fits the space perfectly, thanks to a 55-inch tub they tracked down online.
The thoughtful details throughout each room have transformed the home, making it a uniquely inviting place for her family and guests alike.
