Blending timeless charm with a touch of contemporary flair, this Westlake Village renovation by Ethan Charles Design transformed a dated space into his clients’ forever home. Photographed by Public311 , the kitchen showcases the designer’s creative freedom, with warm, traditional details, curved edges, and natural materials that make the space both beautiful and livable.

From Ethan Charles Design…This client came to us wanting to do a gut remodel on a few spaces in their home. The house had not been renovated for quite some time, and the existing kitchen footprint was great, but the function of the kitchen was horrific. They have had plenty of homes, and investment properties, where they redid the kitchens, but this one needed to be really special, as this was their forever home. They wanted their dream kitchen, so they gave us a call! They gave us carte blanche to do whatever we wanted and we had fun because a lot of their inspiration came from some of our past projects.
The first thing we did was rework the layout, which involved moving a window, plumbing, electrical, removing soffits, and figuring out what to do with the little laundry closet right off the kitchen that was completely non-functional. Once we had the layout and design dialed in, construction began. The biggest hurdle was reinforcing the floors to hold the custom limestone tile we had put in, as it was 1.5-inch-thick tile, and it was heavy. We gave everything in the kitchen a radial corner. You can see when you look at the cabinets that all the exposed edges have been rounded, which we thought was a fun element, and allowed us to pleasantly curve the counter corners to avoid any sharp edges for our clients’ little nieces and nephews that come to visit!

From a design standpoint, we really leaned into all natural and non-toxic materials. We sourced limestone that we had cut into tiles for the flooring, marble counters, white oak cabinets, Italian linen shades, Zellige tile, and all solid brass plumbing and hardware.

“We really feel that the time when your client trusts you implicitly is when the most magical spaces are created, and we think this kitchen proves that!”
