Architect Lauren Crocco envisioned a home that felt rooted in the Colorado landscape, resisting the trend of rustic mountain builds in favor of something more pastoral and enduring. In collaboration with Heidi Caillier Design, this homes interiors were layered with rich textures and quiet imperfections to give the new build a sense of history and soul. This spectacular Ridgway home was captured by photographer Haris Kenjar.

From Lauren Crocco A & D …The homeowners originally contacted Heidi Caillier in 2020 to renovate their recently purchased home located on 11.5 acres in Ridgway, Colorado. Soon after the first meeting, they learned that they had twin girls on the way. It was clear they were going to need a bigger home in the very near future. Heidi brought us on to develop the design for a new 6,000-square-foot, 4 bedroom, 6.5 bath new build. Early on it was established that the owners didn’t want a house that felt new or fit the mold of other mountain homes being built in the area. They had a strong desire for their home to feel established, timeless, lived-in and imperfect.
Given the home is surrounded by grasslands and pastures, the architecture team bucked the current trends for rustic mountain homes and leaned into a design that felt more pastoral. The living spaces feature large windows and doors that are oriented toward the view of the San Juan Mountains, opening onto the flagstone patio space. Two established Cottonwood trees anchor the home in the landscape. The clients identified this place under the trees as their favorite spot on the site. Now an outdoor fireplace, built-in BBQ and retractable sunshade make this space usable all year long.

Inside, the HCD team added reclaimed wood flooring and beams, beautifully textured reclaimed wall paneling, and limewash paint to the structure to make the build feel older. We worked together to enhance the feeling of creating an older home with smaller closet doors, transoms, and varied ceiling heights. All go a long way to make the new home feel lived-in and charming.

The blue limewashed family room is a family favorite with a cozy fireplace and wonderfully playful patterns and reclaimed beams. The perfect place to gather for a movie night.

Their eldest daughter’s bedroom is cocooned in wallpaper, with its darling swoopy ceilings, and little hidden built-in nook where the three sisters curl up and cuddle.

Finally, there is the unexpected second floor greenhouse fit with its own coffee station located just off the primary bedroom. A fantastic escape for the wife, who is an avid plant collector. This home is a collection of unique and memorable spaces designed specifically with our clients in mind. The feeling of the house has been described as magical with a surprise around every corner.
