Today’s coastal home tour is the epitome of Newport Beach casual chic. Dressed in light wood tones, rattan accents, subtle blue hues and linens, this contemporary dwelling is stamped with the signature style of our friends at Design Works. And because California living isn’t complete without a killer outdoor space, you can bet it comes complete with the dreamiest al fresco arena that is beckoning the entertainer at heart. We sat down with Robin Strickler to glean on the makings of this abode.

Can you tell us a bit about the inspiration behind the design? What were your client’s needs/priorities in this project?

Prior to moving into this home, our clients/homeowners were living in a very Tuscan-style home – think lots of darker wood tones, gold walls, heavy stone, etc. Their goal for their new home was to create a beautiful space that was light and airy. They wanted a lot of white space, no clutter – somewhere they could relax and feel comfortable – and also entertain their family and friends.

How would you define the style of this space in just a few words?

I would define this style as very open and inviting, with a mix of natural textures and a very organic feel.

Were there any challenges you encountered while designing this project?

There weren’t a ton of challenges – we got along really well with our client, and the decision process was seamless, which always helps when designing a home! One of the challenges we had from a design perspective was making the interior of this home feel warmer. It was a bit dark and dated before – so we wanted to brighten it up to meet our client’s needs.

Also, since it is located just minutes from the beach, we wanted to give it a coastal vibe – but without having it look too ‘beachy’ and kitschy. We definitely achieved this with the black and white beach photo gallery in the kitchen, neutral palette throughout, and adding the light woods, rattan, and stunning artwork.

What is your favorite design element in this home?

My favorite design element has to be the two seating areas in the great room. I love how they flow together and make everything feel cohesive. We took a really large space and created two seating areas since the family loves to have people over – and this way when you’re in the kitchen – you can look out and see both seating areas – one with couches and one with chairs – but it all families together and looks great!

The outdoor space is killer! Can you talk about the difference in your process of designing an outdoor vs. indoor space? And can we come over for a margarita?!

Thank you! You are welcome for a margarita anytime!

We were able to have some fun with the outdoor space – using the funky black and white tile on the bar, open shelving, lanterns, and a fireplace. It is a space that we really wanted them to be able to use year-round – and since it opens off the main living area, there really is an indoor/outdoor feel throughout the home. The outdoor area has a 360-degree view of the ocean that literally takes your breath away – there isn’t a bad seat outside! That view combined with the amazing landscape really made this outdoor space spectacular.
