What is one to do when their family hub has a small appliance malfunction? A full-scale renovation of course! Kelley Gable and her husband, who have spent much of their lives living all over the world, decided that their beloved beach house and landing pad deserved a little TLC. Little did they know they were headed toward a full renovation complete with a second kitchen and a garage. Keep reading to see just what they added (a lot!) and how they honored the house that has been a consistent presence in their life for the past ten years.
From the designer… This home rebuild was very special to me as it is our personal beach home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. My husband and I purchased the property close to 10 years ago and collectively have lived all over the world from China to Panama and back in the States from coast-to-coast, Maryland to California. But through all of our moves and through other big life events like the births of our two children, this property has always been our landing pad and a place we called home.
The entire rebuild and renovation came about initially when our dishwasher broke in the summer of 2020. A simple kitchen appliance swap quickly snowballed into a complete overhaul including taking the existing small three bedroom cottage down to its studs, reconfiguring it, and adding a second story, two car garage, and a screened-in kitchen and living space off the pool area. We had some beautiful core family memories in the former home so we wanted to preserve what worked and make what didn’t work more functional for our growing family. It resulted in a five bedroom, six bathroom home that now represents our East Coast roots married beautifully with the California casual lifestyle we have grown to love so much.
A kitchen is often the heart of the home and because this is a beach home and time is often spent outdoors, we decided to create two; a traditional kitchen indoors within a statement great room, and a weather-proof screened-in kitchen and living space outdoors just steps away from the pool deck. Creating an inviting space for family and friends to gather was essential within the entire home and the design reflects this in its calming color palette, open floor plan, and laid back natural textures throughout.
It was important when designing this home that it was kid-friendly as we have two young children. We incorporated a custom designed bunk room with coastal elements like adorable sailboat wallpaper and shiplap detailing. Adjoining spaces include a jack-and-jill bathroom that uses fun finishes like penny tiles to keep the bathroom design youthful.
