Set against the rolling hills of Fairbanks Ranch, this classic California ranch-style home reflects the grounded yet refined lifestyle of a local family and their chocolate lab, Powder. Tidal Interiors brought the family’s vision to life with a thoughtful mix of natural textures and by creating the heart of the house, a sunken great room invites gathering with its custom iron windows with sweeping views of the zero-edge pool and stables beyond. From Tidal Interiors… From the very beginning, our priority was to design a home tailored to the family who lives here: two working professionals, their school-aged son, and a chocolate lab, Powder- an ode to their love of skiing. Deeply rooted in their community, they embrace the Southern California lifestyle, spending weekends at the beach, mountain biking along local trails or in the mountains skiing. The design intent was to create a calm and serene environment for this memorable property.
Our favorite space in this project is the great room, an expansive layout that combines the living, dining, and kitchen areas. As you enter through a beautifully crafted pivot door, finished with Shou Sugi Ban—a traditional Japanese technique that preserves wood by artfully charring its surface, creating a rich, dark, and textured finish, you’re welcomed into an inviting, cohesive environment. The custom linen-colored plaster walls and warm flooring create a tranquil, understated backdrop, enhanced by mood lighting that brings a soft glow to the space. The sunken living room, framed by tall custom iron windows and draped with sheer Otis curtains, draws you in with its cozy elegance. In the dining and kitchen areas, breathtaking views overlook the zero edge pool and nearby stables with grazing horses, grounding the space in natural beauty. It’s a room that blends style and functionality effortlessly, making it both a central gathering spot and an idyllic retreat.
