This remarkable Utah home transformation by Alex Adamson centers on infusing light and creating a serene, welcoming atmosphere. A standout feature—the custom colonial-style staircase balustrade—instantly brightens the space, adding an airy, open feel. With elegant cabinetry details and a timeless color palette, beautifully captured by Malissa Mabey, this home now strikes the perfect balance between style and functionality.

From the designer… This was a remodel of a home my client has lived in for 10 years. When I first came to the home, there was outdated travertine tile, orange toned wood floors, and brown carpet that gave an enclosed, cave like feeling. Our client wanted a light and inviting space that functioned well for their growing family. We couldn’t be happier with how much lighter and brighter the entire home feels now!

The first thing we did was update the foundational elements of the interior – the flooring, paint, carpet, and a few structural changes like centering the corner fireplace. We replaced the heavy chunky wood and metal balustrade with a painted colonial style that fit the architecture a bit better. We couldn’t believe what a difference the stairs alone made! We also added a few paneling details in more formal rooms such as the dining, formal sitting, and primary bedroom.

We then got to work on cabinetry, always such a fun part of the design process for me. We used a mix of warm gray, white oak, and soft whites on the cabientry throughout the home to tie into the wall paint and flooring. I added pretty feminine details like reeded fronts to a few special spots like the dining hutch and primary bathroom. Throughout the whole home, we took the cabinetry to the ceiling to maximize storage space and give a sense of height. This instantly made every space feel bigger and look more custom.

What I’m most proud of is the feeling we achieved when you walk into the home now. The client still tells me she loves the welcoming, calm feeling you get inside now which is the best compliment. We’re now working to update her exterior materials to match that same feeling!
