With a tight timeline and post-covid sourcing challenges, this Pasadena mid-century home was transformed into a space that honors its architectural heritage while embracing a refined, collected design. Courtney Bates Design preserved the home’s renowned history, enhancing its natural light, warm materiality, and connection to the landscape. Through the lens of Tina Michelle Photo, the space unfolds—a seamless fusion of past and present, where architectural integrity meets lived-in warmth.

From Courtney Bates Design…This project stays true to the original mid-century architecture of Harold B. Zook while bringing in a warm and layered design. These clients needed to move in quickly, but with post-COVID stock shortages and long lead times, sourcing was a challenge—making this feel like a “quick-fire challenge” in design.
To keep things on track without sacrificing quality, we pulled together a mix of in-stock pieces, vintage finds, and smart after-market modifications. One example is the travertine dining table—we loved the top, but the base didn’t totally work with our wood palette, so we had our refinishers change it to better complement the space. We also made some key custom pieces happen by calling in favors from trusted furniture makers who could work within our tight timeline. Layering textures, sculptural forms, and a muted, earthy palette helped everything feel cohesive and intentional.

Even with the challenges, creative problem-solving and quick decisions ensured a successful outcome. The final result is a collected, comfortable take on mid-century living—unique to the client and perfectly fitting their taste.
