This Newport Beach home combines rustic architecture with a lush, meadow-like landscape that invites a sense of timeless elegance. Spearheaded by landscape designer Chris Fenmore of Garden Studio Design, the vision for this property was to bring a touch of the French countryside to coastal California. Chris crafted a harmonious blend of cobblestone pathways, European limestone accents, and mature trees, all chosen to evoke a natural, established feel. Captured by Riley Starr Photography, and contributing photographer, Ryan Garvin, the result is a landscape that is effortlessly welcoming, with layered textures and organic lines that frame the estate beautifully.

From the landscape designer… Nestled within the prestigious enclave of Big Canyon in Newport Beach, our Sycamore Estate project embodies luxury living with a timeless elegance that feels both familiar and fresh. From the very first conversation, our client envisioned a landscape that would serve as the crown jewel of our portfolio, setting the stage for a truly collaborative journey. Given this creative freedom, we had the opportunity to bring our vision to life with a sense of openness that is as rare as it is invigorating.

Partnering with Eric Olsen Design was a natural fit. The rustic yet refined architecture of the home seamlessly aligns with our approach, creating a harmonious flow between the house and the landscape. As our design conversations evolved with both Eric and the clients, a unifying theme emerged: a nod to the timeless charm of the French countryside. Chris Fenmore, our principal designer, led the charge, envisioning a space that felt like it had always been there—a home that appeared as if it was “plopped in the middle of an existing meadow.”

With that inspiration in mind, we layered in European limestone accents, a winding cobblestone drive, meandering stone pathways, and mature specimen trees, each element thoughtfully chosen to echo the historical charm of Provence. The lush, organic plantings create a tapestry of textures and colors, weaving a story of rustic elegance from every angle.

One of our favorite moments came with the subtle grade change in the backyard, creatively integrated through bands of limestone within the natural grass. And in the front drive, grand California Sycamore trees and field-grown olives frame the home beautifully, grounding it in a stylistic balance that feels as enduring as it is inviting.
