Drawing inspiration from Mediterranean colors and style, Susan Skornicka revitalized a dated California home to create a bright, minimalist sanctuary. By introducing colorful artwork and elements that connect the home to its natural surroundings she created a space that is grounded it in the timeless spirit of Mediterranean life. John Merkl’s interior shots highlight the home’s light-filled, airy ambiance, while Adam Potts’ exterior photography captures the seamless blend with the surrounding beauty.
From the designer… When our client purchased the home it had not been updated in quite a while and felt dark and dated. We sought to completely refresh the interior and lighten up the entire home in color and feel to create a minimalist, airy feeling in the home with a timeless look. Our intention was to remodel the home, not completely overhaul it with new construction. Every decision was made with the focus on quality and timelessness versus extravagance.
We were inspired by the colors and style of the Mediterranean countries. Taking cues from this style, we added colorful elements to the home that made it feel alive and connected to our own natural backdrop, the San Francisco Bay, Mt. Tam, and the native flowers, plants and trees. This was difficult to conceive at first, but turned out better than imagined. All of our choices resulted in an updated, yet classic Mediterranean style that is cohesive and connected to nature.
We painted all the walls white with an eco-friendly limewash finish, adding texture and movement while keeping the space bright and clean, preserving the Mediterranean style in a fresh way. The flooring, once inconsistent, was replaced with light hardwood that mirrors the natural limestone outside, creating a cohesive flow throughout the home. The kitchen island, painted in Benjamin Moore’s “Teal,” adds a bold vibrancy, while natural hues and textures contribute to the warm, welcoming atmosphere.
Large paintings by Suzanne Onodera, purchased from Seager Gray Gallery in Mill Valley, grace the dining and living rooms, their colors inspiring accent pieces and textiles, completing the cohesive design with personal flair. The design of this home is brought to life through carefully chosen elements that blend soul, artistry, and Mediterranean charm. It’s absolutely gorgeous, yet still so comfortable and livable for the entire family, including the grandchildren.
