Jamie of Smith Home Studios redesigned her family’s 1970s A-frame into a warm and contemporary hideaway. Photographed by David Engelhardt, the New York home retains its nostalgic charm while embracing a clean, soft-modern aesthetic suited to a ski-loving family’s modern lifestyle.

From Smith Home Studios… The Smith Home A-Frame is a full renovation of a classic 1970s cabin at the base of Hunter Mountain in Upstate New York. Designed as a personal retreat for Jamie Smith, her husband Bryan, and their two children (both competitive skiers), the project preserves the home’s original A-frame character while adding space to entertain.
Jamie’s “soft modern” approach blends clean lines with natural textures and a muted palette inspired by the surrounding landscape. Oak, brass, marble, and refinished pine paneling bring warmth and continuity, while curved furnishings and durable materials make the cabin elevated yet welcoming, but never too precious.

During the renovation, Jamie enclosed the front porch to create an entry, mudroom, and guest room, and reimagined the back roofline to carve out a basement bunk room, main-floor kitchen, and top-floor primary suite.
