When a young couple from Huntington Beach asked JZ Interior Designs to reimagine their basic tract home they had two requests: an elevated space and a kid-friendly abode. By using durable materials on classic shapes Jamie and her team were able to create a space that is casual yet refined while still capable of handling the wear and tear of daily toddler time. From the designer… When we started this project, this fun, young family was moving into an older tract home that needed some serious updating. We wanted an elevated and relaxed space as the family has a pool and are so close to the beach and knew that we wanted their lifestyle to be reflective in their home.
We started with the basics; flooring, lighting, paint, and refreshing a dated fireplace. Once the flooring was in and the walls were painted, we got to work on furnishing and bringing in that elevated look. It’s important to note that the client has two adorable little boys, so while we wanted some formal adult spaces, we also knew that we needed to utilize materials for a growing family. For the kid-friendly rooms, we used durable materials and fabrics that will stand the test of time. And for the adult spaces, we brought in classic pieces that the family could invest in and grow with.
The clients also love to travel. Some of the beautiful items around their home are from many incredible trips. I love highlighting these pieces in a home as it really does make it unique to the homeowners. One of my favorite pieces in their home is a tapestry that they found in Peru and had framed. When asked what to do with this, I said we had to keep it and make it a focal point. We hung it in the formal dining room which opens to a formal living space, so most of the warmer hues are to coordinate with that beautiful piece.
