In search of a cozy suburban abode, a young family enlisted Lindsey Hanson Design to transform a historic early 1900s Victorian home in coastal Massachusetts. Working closely with the homeowners, Lindsey blended elements of tradition and nature, incorporating family heirlooms with vintage finds and durable family-friendly pieces. Captured by photographer Sarah Winchester, this project showcases a rich palette of green tones, reflecting the client’s deep connection to her childhood home and her love of garden-inspired design.

From the designer… This young family wanted to move out of the city (Boston’s Back Bay) to the suburbs so they could be closer to family. They chose this early 1900s Victorian which needed a full gut renovation. SV Design was hired to do the initial planning and layouts and we were hired to further build out the design plans, furnish and decorate. The project started in early 2020, before the pandemic began, so we did have scheduling and timeline challenges, but the team was wonderful and the clients super grateful and patient, so overall it went really well.

We drew inspiration from the home’s original character and our client’s cherished memories with her parents to create a space where the whole family, including the pup, could feel at ease. We aimed to save and restore as much of the original flooring and cabinetry as possible but much of it had to be replaced because it simply wasn’t functional. We were, however, able to preserve the existing stained glass window which inspired the leaded glass windows we added to the home. We paired elegant pieces, like the Biedermeier antique dining table passed down from the homeowner’s mother, with relaxed, durable finds creating a balance of sophistication and livability.

Our palette was inspired by the couple’s love of nature and all things garden/floral inspired, especially shades of green so we carried these elements throughout. The homeowner has happy memories of her childhood home’s green kitchen and wanted to replicate something similar here. We chose a beautiful green, Herb Bouquet by Benjamin Moore, to pay homage to her childhood home.

“I feel like this house is a love story for my parents, I think of my mom when I see green colors.”
