Emma Thayer Interiors transformed this Maryland home with a breathtaking two-story addition, complete with clerestory windows that bathe the space with natural light. Captured by Christy Kosnic just as a solar eclipse cast its shadow, the images below reveal a home transformed with timeless elegance and a touch of drama. The space exudes both comfort and personality, creating an ideal environment for a growing family to thrive.

From the designer… These clients reached out while expecting their third baby, eager to create new memories in their home but knowing the pre-war colonial lacked space. We decided on a sprawling two-story addition with clerestory windows, placing an emphasis on bringing natural light into the previously dark home. Merging the new space with the original footprint called for a sophisticated classic-meets-modern aesthetic. To keep the new living space from feeling too contemporary, we included a traditional Carrara mantel and an Oushak rug alongside a tailored sectional and channeled leather ottoman. Dark windows and trim help highlight the backyard views and pillows with botanical motifs reinforce the seamless connection to the outdoors.
The rest of the main floor was also overhauled to provide the outgoing couple with formal dining and living spaces to entertain in. Throughout the home, natural woods and leathers provide warmth while timeless emerald, chocolate, and charcoal add an upscale tone. The pièce de résistance is the den: the perfect hideaway for a late-night cocktail featuring a masculine wood ceiling, moody slate walls, and an Eames lounger. Previously an underused living room, the clients agreed a cozy space for unwinding to a classic record should be a non-negotiable for all busy parents.

Photos of the home were taken the day of the 2024 solar eclipse, a unique (and somewhat rushed) experience. Our clients, who were working from home that day, joined us and the photographer as we continually popped outside to sneak peeks at the sky, making sure the family cats did not escape during the mayhem.
