In this thoughtfully reimagined New York home, every design decision was made with intention, blending modern comforts with enduring elegance. Led by Luba of Libarikian Interiors, the extensive renovation maximized natural light, preserved key historical elements, and incorporated bold contrasts. Standout features like a dramatic two-story foyer and a moody whiskey library create interiors that feel both expansive and intimate, striking the perfect balance between spaciousness and warmth, all beautifully captured by Gieves Anderson.

From Libarikian Interiors When approaching the redesign of this home, our team took a bold yet intentional approach—stripping away anything that wasn’t structural and rebuilding each space with the family’s daily rhythms in mind. From where they would put on their shoes to how they would enjoy breakfast, every detail was mapped out to enhance both function and experience. Maximizing natural light was a cornerstone of the project. A soft, neutral color palette of creams and light wood tones helped create an open and inviting ambiance. Walls that once segmented the home were opened, and sheer drapery was used to filter in daylight without obstruction. The architectural details we selected did the heavy lifting of helping the home feel more contemporary. We replaced the original ornate crown moulding with a simpler cove, and we installed a smaller picture frame moulding throughout to define the spaces, but not overpower them.

In the kitchen we selected a durable natural quartzite for the island, and framed the large fridge and freezer with open shelving. A dedicated beverage center, tucked to the side, ensured that drinks and snacks were easily accessible without disrupting the main workflow of the space. Statement lighting and square tile backsplash details further elevated the kitchen’s refined yet approachable aesthetic.

One of the primary challenges in the renovation was maintaining key historical details while updating the home to meet the client’s desire for a brighter, airier atmosphere. The original dining room, with its rich wood paneling and fireplace, was a cherished architectural element, but the homeowners envisioned a lighter space.  While we couldn’t keep the paneling intact, the team found an opportunity to create a dramatic, moody retreat elsewhere in the home—a design decision that ultimately became a favorite feature.

One of our favorite features, and a defining architectural feature of the home, is the double height entry we created in the center of the home. It allows natural light to flow from the second floor down to the main level. It also serves as a central gallery, allowing us to display art that is visible for many different vantage points.

Contrast is very important in every interior – when everything is the same color tone, the whole room feels flat. The Whiskey Library was the perfect opportunity to add a dark and moody space adjacent to light an airy one – the contrast in color makes both spaces stand out. We also knew the library would be used mostly in the evenings, and that’s when we’d want to create a feeling of intimacy and drama – so dark walls and rich velvets help create that mood.

At its core, this home is a reflection of our design team’s philosophy—crafting interiors that are elegant and serene, yet undeniably warm and welcoming. Each project is a unique expression of its homeowners, and this transformation is no exception. By blending thoughtful architecture, curated materials, and personalized details, the result is a home that is as functional as it is beautiful, tailored perfectly to the family’s evolving lifestyle.
