From Bogart Interiors… I recently had the privilege of working with a wonderful family of four who came to me feeling that their kitchen and living spaces no longer fit their needs. Their initial thought was to add more square footage, but through some thoughtful and innovative design, we were able to give them exactly what they were looking for without expanding the footprint of their home.

After spending time with the family and getting a sense of their vision, I realized that a reimagined layout could create all the space and flow they desired. One of the first big changes we made was removing an old wood-burning fireplace and chimney that ran through the center of the house. By replacing it with a modern gas-burning unit, we gained precious square footage and were able to shift the kitchen to face the backyard instead of the driveway. This simple change allowed the space to open up in a way that felt airy and inviting, with a view of the family’s beautiful outdoor space.

We also created a cozy, comfortable seating area in the kitchen, giving the family a perfect spot to gather together—whether it’s for casual meals, morning coffee, or simply enjoying each other’s company. The kitchen became not only a place to cook, but a warm, welcoming space to connect.

Perhaps the most meaningful part of the renovation was incorporating a treasured family heirloom, a grand piano that had been passed down through generations. It was important to the family that the piano remain a central part of their home, so we made sure to design a space where it could be enjoyed without compromising the flow or function of the home. It now holds a special place in their new kitchen area, bringing a sense of history and warmth into their everyday life. Ultimately, we didn’t need to add more space, we simply reimagined how to use the space they already had, making the home more functional and inviting.
