Nestled in the serene desert of La Quinta, California, this home effortlessly embodies the wabi-sabi aesthetic through the vision of Laurie Moulton of Lolo Interiors. Captured beautifully by photographer Madeline Tolle, the home blends organic textures with Mediterranean influences while honoring original elements like stone floors and textural walls. Thoughtfully reimagined, it now serves as a warm and inviting sanctuary for a young family to gather, grow, and create lasting memories.

From the designer… From its inception, this project has been nothing less than a dream to work on. Our clients, who were a young family seeking a desert sanctuary, purchased the home with the vision of creating a space to gather with loved ones and watch their children grow. They fell in love with the conceptual design we presented, allowing us the creative freedom to elevate their home by leaning into its architectural features and bringing in an elevated, organic, yet modern, Mediterranean design.

This project took shape in two phases. The first of which surrounded furniture for the interior and exterior of the home, which required that we develop the design for the renovation of the home at the same time so that we would be able to move into construction quickly once our clients were ready for it.

Our clients chose to preserve some of the original design elements in the home, including stone floors, interior doors and heavy textural walls. Whenever we are working with an original design element that our clients don’t wish to change, we anchor our design to those existing elements in a way that feels intentional and cohesive, as if we chose them as part of our design.

Nearly two years after completing the furnishings for the project, we launched into our second phase, construction. After another year of careful work, the home was realized. Despite working within a few challenging original design elements, the result is a home that both we and our clients can truly cherish. We are thrilled that this beautiful home has created a space where our clients are able to form incredible memories together in such a magical desert setting.
