From the designer… I was employed to revisit the design and function of a previous clients home to address the changing needs of their family. We focused on the foyer, dining room and the new piano room. Right off the foyer and curved staircase, the piano room is grounded in natural, earthy hues. With the new addition of a grand piano to the space, I created a new furniture plan that centered the piano in front of their large windows, opposite of the former focal point, the fireplace. This room gets warm natural light and glows most of the day, so I chose to keep the windows clear to let that light shine. Adding textiles with warm hues gives it an extra glow of warmth. This space is now perfect for sitting to listen to the piano, enjoy a warm fire, or read a good book.
When designing the foyer, I wanted to anchor the space with warm tones and natural textures. It’s a large, two-story entry, which can easily feel overwhelming. I started by adding layers at different levels to invite your eye down, then up; starting with the large scale patterned rug, to the solid ottomans, onto the intricate table, and then continuing up through the subtle mirror. It’s truly a step by step feast for your eyes until you reach the grand, curved staircase and custom paneling. When drawing the custom paneling, I opted for traditional, yet clean lines, to compliment the curved staircase. I love how the trefoil arch floor mirror repeats the curves of the staircase and adds just a touch of brown suede.
The dining room is an intimate place for everyday dining right off the kitchen. I especially love the height the cabinet adds behind the table. Flanked on one side by the art vignette and the vintage pedestal on the other, these pieces create an effortless, layered feeling.
