Julie of Julie Geyer Studio reimagined this home as a warm and whimsical retreat for first-time homeowners eager to honor its 1938 Tudor character while making it their own. Her vision blends English eclectic influences with nature-inspired materials, narrative artwork, and personal references, including subtle touchesx that recall the couple’s wedding on Martha’s Vineyard. Photographed by Ian Michelman the home reveals a thoughtful balance of historic charm, intimacy, and imagination that unfolds room by room.

From Julie Geyer Studio The Saybrook Residence felt like a storybook from the moment our clients first saw it. Built in 1938 during the height of the Tudor Revival movement, the brick exterior, arched entry door, and charming architectural details gave the home an immediate sense of warmth and whimsy. As first-time homeowners, they were eager to make the house their own, while preserving the character that made it feel so special. Our goal became creating interiors that honored the home’s historic charm while layering in warmth, personality, and a sense of quiet enchantment.

From the outset, the design was guided by the clients’ love of nature, storytelling, and meaningful objects. Rather than simply designing a beautiful home, we set out to create a space that felt personal and imaginative. Natural materials, rich wood tones, and soft textiles were paired with layered patterns and thoughtful lighting to create rooms that feel intimate and collected. Art and objects were carefully sourced to reflect meaningful aspects of the couple’s life together, including subtle references to Martha’s Vineyard, where they were married. A wooden map, coastal-inspired artwork, and dimensional book pieces add narrative moments that feel woven into the home rather than decorative.

Throughout the house, traditional architecture is balanced with playful and unexpected details. A richly patterned ceiling transforms the dining nook into a jewel-box moment, while sculptural lighting, woven materials, and curated art create warmth and texture in quieter corners. The result is a home that feels both timeless and deeply personal—a space where Tudor character, nature-inspired elements, and a touch of whimsy come together to create an interior that is both refined and full of story.
