Set on Kiawah Island, this family retreat crafted by Cortney Bishop Design explores a richly layered approach to coastal living, where artisan-made details, expressive wallpaper moments, and varied shades of green create a home that feels both immersive and distinctly personal. Designed with the sensibility of a boutique getaway, the interiors balance playful pattern with thoughtful amenities that support everyday family life while elevating the experience of the space. From Cortney Bishop Design… This project was designed for a young family of six on Kiawah Island, where embracing the coastal living conditions and the home’s natural surroundings felt essential from the start. Working closely with Cumulus Architects and Sands Construction, we focused on creating a collaborative environment that blended the indoors and outdoors. Sculptural forms and layered textures helped the home feel grounded in its setting while remaining welcoming and livable for everyday family life.

We wove in artisanal elements alongside my own collaborations with Hudson Valley Lighting and Amadi Carpets. These pieces helped establish an earthy, eclectic palette anchored by varied shades of green, reflective of the swampy, moody terrain unique to the region. Natural materials and handcrafted details brought depth and warmth to the space, making it feel collected and intentional rather than overly polished or formal.

Knowing this home would host generations of children and countless family gatherings, it was important to strike a balance between comfort and sophisticatication. We leaned into bold furniture shapes and generous proportions to fill the space, pairing them with casual, funky patterns that softened the overall formality. The result is a home that feels playful yet elevated, designed to evolve with the family while honoring the artistry behind every piece.
