Crafted by Together Home Design Studio and photographed by Bess Friday, this San Francisco home blends preserved architectural character with a fresh, expressive point of view. Chelsea and Lissette transformed a once-uncertain layout into a series of inviting, soft modern spaces with historic sensibility. Their redesign brings clarity, cohesion, and a sense of ease to a home shaped equally by its past and its present.

From Lissette & Chelsea… This home sits in the heart of San Francisco’s Noe Valley, a neighborhood known for its beautiful mix of original Victorians and thoughtfully updated residences. From the beginning, we wanted the design to feel rooted in that context, timeless and architectural, but layered with moments of surprise and warmth that reflect how the family lives today. Our clients are a young, well-traveled family with three kids and demanding tech careers, and when they’re home, they love to gather. Early on, we asked them to describe how they wanted the house to feel in just three words: inviting, social, and classy. That became our north star throughout the project — shaping everything from how rooms connect to how materials and colors show up in each space.
When we first came on board, the home was already mid-renovation, with much of it headed toward a full gut. While there was room to reimagine the layout, the clients were deeply invested in preserving the soul of the house. Original elements like the coffered ceiling and stained-glass window became anchors for the design, helping us weave new layers into the home without losing its history. From start to finish, the project took just under a year, and we’re incredibly proud of what came together. The home now supports everything our clients hoped for — busy mornings, slow evenings, and full, joyful gatherings — while honoring the architectural character that drew them to it in the first place. It’s layered, expressive, and deeply livable, and it’s been a joy to watch this family make it their own.

The front room was designed as a soft landing zone for entertaining. We wanted it to feel modern but cozy, layered but not precious — a space that invites conversation and encourages people to settle in. One of our favorite moments is the artwork above the fireplace, styled casually rather than traditionally, as a subtle cue that this is a home meant to be lived in, not staged.

Just beyond, the media room takes on an entirely different mood. With no natural light, we saw an opportunity to create something more immersive — a space that feels rich, enveloping, and perfect for movie nights, music sessions, and late-night conversations. Custom built-ins echo the home’s original architecture so the room feels like it’s always belonged there, while deep tones and tactile materials give it a cocooned energy that contrasts beautifully with the lighter spaces nearby.
