Designed by Ursino Interiors and photographed by Nicole Franzen, this suburban home just outside Manhattan embraces Scandinavian minimalism through a high-contrast, contemporary lens. Light, natural materials like white oak and stone are paired with deeper tones and graphic moments to create visual tension and balance. Together, these elements create a fresh, livable take on contemporary family living.

From Ursino Interiors…This project began as a full-scale renovation of a suburban home just outside Manhattan, with the goal of creating something that felt architecturally refined yet deeply livable. From the outset, the clients were drawn to contemporary design and open to exploring contrast in a way that felt bold but intentional. That openness allowed us to rethink both the spatial layout and the material language of the home, using the renovation as an opportunity to bring clarity, warmth, and cohesion to the main living spaces.

The design was inspired by Scandinavian principles, simplicity, natural materials, and a sense of calm, but interpreted through a higher contrast, more tailored lens. Light woods, stone, and soft neutrals form the foundation, while darker finishes and sculptural moments introduce depth and definition. One of the most impactful architectural changes was reconfiguring the kitchen to improve flow and capture the surrounding views, transforming it into a true centerpiece of the home. Material choices there, from custom white oak cabinetry to a dark-painted island and expressive marble, reflect the balance sought throughout the project.

Initially, the home was designed with durability and everyday family life in mind, balancing a refined, contemporary aesthetic with materials and layouts that could stand up to daily use. As construction progressed, the clients learned they were expecting twins, which ultimately reinforced the importance of those early decisions. Thoughtful planning, resilient upholstery, and hard wearing finishes allowed the home to function effortlessly once the family grew, and the arrival of the twins became a true test of the design. The result is a high-contrast contemporary home that feels considered and polished, yet practical, comfortable, and built to evolve alongside the family.
