Designed by Amy Carman Design and photographed by Ryan Hainey, this Oconomowoc retreat pairs approachable luxury with a warm, contemporary sensibility. Set on a property that predates the creation of Waterville Lake, the home reflects the owners’ deep connection to the land and a vision for timeless, family-centered living.

From Amy Carman Design… Sandhill Retreat, perched on private Waterville Lake in Oconomowoc, was created for a couple with a deep connection to the property. The original home predated the lake itself. Decades ago, developers dammed Scuppernong Creek, forming a serene and private body of water for swimming, boating, and fishing, though it left the original ranch feeling disconnected from its surroundings. The clients decided to start anew, tearing down the old house and crafting a fresh chapter for the property.
Designed to accommodate multiple generations and guests, the main level includes a gracious primary suite, a spacious living room and kitchen. The home also includes a separate three-bedroom apartment with a kitchenette and living space, offering flexible accommodations for guests year-round.

The foyer centers on a majestic maple tree that has stood on the property for generations. A handmade macramé piece hangs above the stairs, while an alabaster chandelier drapes across the foyer. An abstract photograph of oil stains on concrete, captured by the client’s brother, adds a personal and unexpected touch.

A private “Dam Room” offers fireside movie nights with a view. The room’s name honors the small dam that created Waterville Lake, and the gentle rush of water is audible when the windows are open.
