Designed by Molly Miller Interiors and captured by photographer Aimee Ryan, this New York City apartment tells the story of a young family’s first true home. With an eye toward longevity and livability, the once disjointed space was reworked into a light-filled, cohesive retreat layered with subtle color, texture, and warmth. Set in the heart of the Upper West Side, it’s a study in practical elegance designed to evolve with the family for years to come.

From Molly Miller Interiors…A young family, with kids aged four and six, purchased their first home and set out with a clear directive—create a space they would love for the next 15 to 20 years, at least. The apartment had been previously combined from two adjacent units, leaving behind a series of choppy soffits and dropped ceilings, and with materials and finishes that felt dark, dated, and uninspired. Our goal was to design a space that felt fresh, inviting, and practical while still feeling timeless enough to grow with this young family.
The renovation focused on creating a home that would stand the test of time. The ceilings were cleaned up by eliminating awkward soffits in key areas like the dining area, foyer, and family room, creating a much more open and airy atmosphere. To eliminate soffits, the lighting throughout was upgraded to new recessed lights with slimmer housings or was swapped for decorative fixtures where possible. The floors were refinished to a lighter, soft brown, while the kitchen received a much-needed facelift with new light-veined quartz countertops and backsplash, LED lighting, the addition of decorative pendants, and plumbing fixtures that brought the space into the present without feeling overly trendy.

The color story throughout the apartment is carefully curated. With the main living spaces all open to one another, each room has its own vibe, while feeling connected and cohesive. The apartment is both bright and serene, with subtle layers of colors and textures that evoke a sense of calm but with moments of brightness and fun. Every decision was made with durability and kid-friendly functionality in mind, creating spaces that are as practical for a young family as they are chic.
