Perched on the stunning shores of La Jolla, California, this Hawaiian Coastal-inspired makeover by Whit at Home was a designer’s dream come true. With no budget limits and no creative restraints, Whit transformed a rustic 80s oceanfront house into a laidback retreat. Captured beautifully by Jenna Gilmer, every detail reflects the joy and freedom of the design process, making this home as inspiring as it is inviting. Don’t miss the video tour by RE Creative at the end to see more of this stunning retreat and a celebratory jump in the pool (clothes and all)!

From the designer… This project was one for the books! A true designers dream. No budget, no creative restraints, no requirements and the only directive, “Do what you think is best – I can’t wait to see it in the end.” We took that and ran with it. Discovering the aesthetic direction was a bit of a challenge – an 80s home right on the ocean, with a rustic Italian exterior. The house was confused, needless to say. We drew inspiration from the coastal surroundings, rich wood trim work, arches, and that’s about it. The house was completely gutted and we started from scratch. We focused on neutral, organic materials with blue tones throughout. The dining chandelier was a personal favorite – handmade from coconuts. From beginning to end, this project truly flowed, just like a calm ocean. On reveal day, we had margaritas and tacos from our favorite local taco shop waiting to greet our clients as they arrived from the East Coast. In their words “What I like best–every area of the home looks like the perfect napping space.” Mission accomplished! We ended the project by jumping fully clothed in the pool!
