This 1950s colonial set on a charming street in Rumson, NJ, has been reimagined by Salt Design Co. The renovation masterfully balances clean, modern silhouettes with traditional charm by layering vibrant punches of color and bold marble furnishings. Linda Pordon Photography captured the result, a sophisticated, family-friendly space that feels both fresh and rooted in the home’s original architecture.
From Kiera Gannon, Salt’s Design Director… The Blossom Road Renovation is nestled on a picturesque street in Rumson, NJ, and involved transforming a classic 1950s colonial home to reflect the homeowners’ modern style, while respecting the timeless appeal of the original architecture. From conception, our goal was to create a seamless blend of old and new, giving the home a fresh yet rooted identity. One of the key transformations was blowing through a wall to open up the space into a grander “great” room, allowing for a more fluid and connected living space.
Working with the home’s existing bones posed some challenges, particularly in the kitchen, where we had to maximize the design potential under sub-eight-foot ceiling heights. We introduced traditional shaker-style cabinetry and rich, dark hardwood floors to ground the space, while the modern silhouettes of the furniture added contrast and sophistication. The kitchen features soapstone countertops that provide a timeless appeal, and a removable bar shelf at the passthrough window offers a unique element for entertaining.
Throughout the design, we added vibrant punches of color, bold marble, and layers of leather to inject personality and warmth into the home. This juxtaposition of styles, combined with carefully selected materials, made the project one-of-a-kind—both for its design challenges and the creative solutions we crafted to overcome them.
Ultimately, we were left with a gorgeous result—a modern, sophisticated space that is still family-friendly. The home feels effortlessly livable without sacrificing elegance, making it perfect for both everyday living and entertaining. What’s most rewarding is that the new interior does not feel out of place with the rest of the home or its colonial-style architecture. It feels like a natural extension of the original design, yet updated to reflect the homeowners’ contemporary tastes and lifestyle. The final space is an inviting and balanced mix of tradition and modernity.
